Types of volunteering

Volunteering has never been more diverse or flexible. No matter who you are, where you live, or how much time you have to give, there are so many opportunities for you to step up and and volunteer.

  • Formally through an organisation or community group (anything from volunteer fire and rescue, ambulance officers, walking dogs, photography, companionship and conversations, art, cooking classes, advocacy and mentorship.
  • Informally in your community by helping a friend neighbour.
  • Corporate volunteering with your employees.
  • Micro-volunteering.
  • Virtual volunteering.
  • Spontaneous volunteering following a natural disaster or emergency.

Frequency and time commitments

We know people are busy, and you might think volunteering is just something else that competes for your time, but when you think about it volunteering is actually pretty productive!

Every volunteering opportunity is different. Some organisations might be looking for a once-off volunteer for an event, a couple of hours per month, or regularly throughout the week. Roles can be in-person or online and you’ll always find something that can fit around your other time commitments.

We know volunteering tends to drop off for people when they’re at their peak of fulltime work or raising a family, and then picks up again post-retirement, so organisations are starting to introduce more flexible roles.
