Creating safe spaces for inclusive participation | Case Study

This project by Umbrella Multicultural Community Care was supported through Volunteering WA’s Volunteer Management Activity, funded by the Australian Government Department of Social Services.

The challenge: Engaging people who were disconnected from community

Ana, a newly arrived migrant, passionate community member, training to become a counsellor, stepped forward to apply as a Peer Leader for the Umbrella Community Hub. She was drawn by her love for connecting with people and creating welcoming spaces, but she saw a real need: many in the community felt isolated, with quieter individuals hesitant to join conversations and limited awareness of local initiatives keeping people disconnected.

At the start, the challenge was clear—building an inclusive environment where everyone, regardless of background or confidence level, could feel valued and engaged.

Taking a flexible approach to draw in quieter participants

As a Peer Leader, Ana took an empathetic, flexible approach to facilitate sessions, focusing on active listening and gentle encouragement to draw in quieter participants. She planned inclusive activities, coordinated with others, and adapted to diverse needs, all while balancing support without dominating conversations.

Challenges arose, like finding ways to boost participation and raise community awareness about the Hub, but Ana turned these into opportunities for growth—reflecting weekly and adjusting her methods with patience and creativity.

This hands-on facilitation promoted inclusive volunteering by empowering participants to lead natural conversations and share their own experiences.

Outcomes

The Hub transformed into a vibrant space of belonging, where people formed new friendships, discovered local projects, and felt less isolated. Ana witnessed inspiring connections: participants opening up, supporting one another, and getting involved in community activities they never knew existed.

Ana herself grew immensely—gaining confidence in facilitation, communication, and working with diverse groups. She now shares her learnings on active listening and building relationships, encouraging others to stay socially active for better wellbeing.

“It has been rewarding to see people benefit from the sessions, make new connections and feel more involved in the community. The Hub brings together different members of the community, and it gives everyone a sense of belonging.” – Ana

Key Learnings

Creating safe, flexible spaces with empathetic leadership is essential for inclusive participation, especially with diverse or quieter groups. Small, consistent efforts in facilitation can overcome isolation, foster genuine connections, and uncover hidden community passions—proving that peer-led hubs powerfully reduce loneliness and build lasting support networks. This project highlights the impact of inclusive volunteer management: by investing in roles like Peer Leaders, we equip individuals to drive change, amplifying community voices and creating ripple effects of engagement and purpose.
