Love adventure and helping young people? Volunteering with Scouts WA might be perfect for you

Scouting is a global youth movement that fosters adventure, learning, and personal growth. As the peak body for scouting in Western Australia, our member Scouts WA supports 7,400 members through Australia’s progressive, age-based scouting program. This wouldn’t be possible without dedicated volunteers who inspire and empower the next generation.

We had the pleasure of speaking with Scouts WA Youth Member Samuel Harris, this year’s Scout of the Year Awardee, about Scouts WA’s volunteering experience.

How do volunteers contribute to empowering young people through Scouts WA? What roles do they typically take on?

Samuel: Volunteers are the backbone of Scouts WA, playing a vital role in empowering young people to develop resilience, leadership, and life skills. They take on a wide range of responsibilities — from leading adventurous activities like hiking, camping, and canoeing to mentoring youth in teamwork, problem-solving, and personal growth.

Each week, our dedicated volunteers contribute over two hours of their time, taking on significant responsibility to ensure programs run smoothly, safely, and with purpose. They’re not just helpers — they’re role models, mentors, and the driving force behind the life-changing experiences scouting provides. Without these passionate individuals, scouting wouldn’t be what it is today. They truly make scouting happen, creating an environment where young people can thrive, explore, and discover their potential.

What sets Scouts WA apart from other organisations involving young people and volunteers?

What sets Scouts WA apart is our unique blend of adventure, personal development, and community impact. We empower young people to face challenges and discover their potential, while our passionate volunteers mentor and guide them. It’s not just about activities; it’s about shaping the next generation of leaders who will make a difference. This combination of fun, growth, and service creates a supportive environment that truly sets Scouts WA apart.

Is there a particular volunteer whose journey through Scouts stands out to you?

One volunteer who truly stands out to me is Danelle Fauntleroy. She embodies the spirit of Scouting through her unwavering dedication and determination. Danelle consistently gives 110% to everything she takes on, tackling challenges head-on and finding solutions to problems that others may overlook. Her passion, resilience, and commitment inspire everyone around her — she’s not just a great volunteer, but a vital part of what makes our scouting community stronger and better every day. I’m incredibly proud to have worked alongside someone so driven and selfless.

How has being a Volunteering WA member helped Scouts WA succeed? What value do you find in membership?

Being a member of Volunteering WA has been instrumental in helping Scouts WA succeed by providing a strong network of resources, support, and recognition for the incredible volunteers who power our movement. Through this membership, we've gained valuable training opportunities, tools to enhance our volunteer programs, and a deeper connection to the broader volunteer community. The value of being part of this organisation is immeasurable — it not only boosts our ability to grow and improve but also ensures that Scouts WA is recognised as a key contributor to volunteerism across the state. It’s an invaluable partnership that empowers our scouts and strengthens the impact we make together.

What’s the most exciting initiative Scouts WA is currently working on?

The most exciting initiative Scouts WA is currently working on is the upcoming OneCamp 2026. Myself and the team are putting in the hard work and preparation to make this state event an unforgettable experience. The last OneCamp was a massive success, bringing together Scouts from across the state for an incredible weekend of adventure, skill-building, and lasting memories. We’re looking to build on that success and make OneCamp 2026 even bigger and more exciting, with new challenges and experiences that will inspire the next generation of Scouts.
