Special International Volunteer Day Feature

St John WA's purpose is to serve humanity and build resilient communities through the relief of sickness, distress, suffering and danger, with the aim of being there for every Western Australian and connecting them with care to benefit wellbeing and health by 2030. They are a leading organisation in volunteering – dedicating almost half a lifetime in volunteered hours (424,597 hours) to the Western Australian community every year.

About two thirds of SJWA’s team members volunteer in a range of roles from on-road emergency ambulance response and patient transfer in regional and remote locations, to state-wide logistics, volunteer support, community transport and Event Health Services.

SJWA’s new leadership has developed a strong forward-thinking focus on building the volunteer experience across the length and breadth of all parts of the not-for-profit organisation to support team members who are volunteers.

Efforts to connect volunteering areas closer together, provide new opportunities for volunteers looking for different experiences and potential career paths, and embedding the volunteer voice at every level, as well as growing the volunteer team have been defined in the ‘Volunteering reimagined’ pillar of SJWA’s new Strategic Plan, which includes new values of:
• Walk the Talk,
• Think Team,
• Make it Better,
• Lead with Heart.

A team of 12 active, passionate, and positive volunteer representatives have formed the Volunteer Advocacy Team (VAT) tasked with reimagining the volunteer experience, which is geared to raise awareness and foster a shared understanding of volunteering roles within SJWA and their diverse challenges and bring together all the different types of volunteering roles within the organisation.

Volunteers have been the foundational strength of St John WA since 1902.
