Brian’s journey into volunteering began unexpectedly. Working as a gardener for the Sandstone Shire in the Mid-West, he was asked to establish a local ambulance sub-centre. With no background in healthcare, Brian stepped up—travelling 500km round trips on weekends for training, sourcing second-hand gear including uniforms and an ambulance. He drove the establishment of the service from scratch.

That humble beginning sparked a 27-year commitment with St John WA, where he’s since cross-trained across departments and now works professionally within the organisation.

Winning the RAC Volunteer of the Year Award was an emotional moment.

“I was in complete shock. I forgot parts of my speech, including thanking the other finalists – I still get emotional thinking about it.”

Brian credits his late mother as his biggest inspiration. “She instilled in me the importance of helping others—it was second nature to her, particularly during her 11-year battle with dementia.” Her influence continues to guide him, especially as he mentors new volunteers and supports young people.

Brian continues to spend his spare time, knitting sensory aids for people with dementia and autism and is working to establish scholarships that give underprivileged youth the opportunity to join the St John Cadets. Brian offers a powerful reminder about the impact of volunteers, “whether you are a tiny pebble or a large rock in a pond, both have a ripple effect. Even the smallest act of kindness can help transform a life.”

Thank you, Brian, for your compassion, and your example. You remind us all that real change begins with one choice, to care.
