Scouting is a global youth movement that fosters adventure, learning, and personal growth. As the peak body for scouting in Western Australia, our member Scouts WA supports 7,400 members through Australia’s progressive, age-based scouting program. This wouldn’t be possible without dedicated volunteers who inspire and empower the next generation.
We had the pleasure of speaking with Scouts WA Youth Member Samuel Harris, this year’s Scout of the Year Awardee, about Scouts WA’s volunteering experience.
How do volunteers contribute to empowering young people through Scouts WA? What roles do they typically take on?
Samuel: Volunteers are the backbone of Scouts WA, playing a vital role in empowering young people to develop resilience, leadership, and life skills. They take on a wide range of responsibilities — from leading adventurous activities like hiking, camping, and canoeing to mentoring youth in teamwork, problem-solving, and personal growth.
Each week, our dedicated volunteers contribute over two hours of their time, taking on significant responsibility to ensure programs run smoothly, safely, and with purpose. They’re not just helpers — they’re role models, mentors, and the driving force behind the life-changing experiences scouting provides. Without these passionate individuals, scouting wouldn’t be what it is today.
