What started as a two-year adventure has turned into a two-decade love affair with Australian wildlife.

20 years ago, Paula and her husband relocated from the UK to Perth for his job for two years. Having been given this opportunity, Paula wanted to make the most of being here, and she also wanted to give something back to the community that had made her feel so welcome. She felt this should be something uniquely Australian, so she chose Caversham Wildlife Park.

Paula has previously visited the park and enjoyed how hands-on and accessible it was, and how friendly and welcome the staff were. Signing up to their volunteer program was one of the first things she did upon arriving in Australia. After two years they decided to stay in Perth, and so two years has become 20 and counting!

“Volunteering at Caversham has led to new friendships and I’ve learned a lot about Australian animals and witnessed the development of the park over the years.”

For Paula, one of the best aspects of volunteering has been meeting a variety of people, locals as well as people from all over the world. She enjoys being able to make everyone’s visit that much more memorable, and help their time at the park go smoothly.

“Debbie, Suzi and all the team are so very supportive. I have been lucky to share the journey with Debbie for twenty years. Their program has been so supportive of family and work commitments which makes volunteering there even better.”

Paula’s commitment has also had a ripple effect on her whole family, inspiring them to take up their own volunteer roles, including Parkrun and fostering dogs in need of homes.
