Creating the conditions for volunteering to thrive

Volunteering is time freely given, but volunteering isn’t free.

It costs volunteers an average of $13.75 for every hour of time they give to the WA community – that’s a 120% increase since 2015.  The cost to volunteer is now a major barrier.

We know volunteering brings enormous benefits to WA, $64 billion a year in fact!

We continue to work with members, stakeholders and volunteers across WA to understand what can be done to improve the volunteering experience, and champion your needs and interests.

Strengthening Volunteering

Volunteering does not just happen; it requires investment.

As the peak body, Volunteering WA champions the volunteering community and provides support to volunteer-involving organisations throughout the State.

We work closely with Volunteering Australia and other state and territory volunteering peak bodies to advocate on issues of national importance and work collaboratively to align policy with industry best practice. We build relationships, undertake research and gather data and information to inform and support policy positions.

Advocacy Priorities

  • Fix the Volunteer Screening system, including removing fees for volunteer screening checks and providing a screening checks online portal.
  • Conduct a review of the insurance arrangements applying to volunteers in Western Australia, including:
    • Expand Workers Compensation coverage to some categories of volunteers.
    • Provide insurance coverage for volunteers in Community Service Organisations.
  • Fund Volunteering WA’s role in emergency services.
  • Connect more people to volunteering, including young people, families, and seniors.
  • Commission regular State of Volunteering reporting.

Reduce the Burden Campaign

Volunteer-involving organisations and volunteers in WA consistently report that the cost of statutory volunteering screening is excessive and that the administration creates a significant barrier to volunteering.

Volunteering WA supports the need for screening to provide a safe and non-discriminatory environment for organisations, staff, volunteers and clients; however we advocates for opportunities to improve and streamline the screening process.

An Expert Reference Group on Volunteer Screening has been established to provide recommendations ~ further detail below.

Direct Voice To Government

The Volunteering Community Reference Group provides direct advice to the Minister for Volunteering on issues and trends in the volunteering sector. Volunteering WA convened the reference group in 2018 to bring together diverse expertise.

Members represent different sectors within volunteering:

  • Minister for Volunteering.
  • Chair and Convenor (Volunteering WA).
  • Department of Communities.
  • Corporate Sector.
  • Research.
  • Local Government.
  • Volunteer Resource Centres.
  • Volunteers.
  • Volunteer-involving Organisations.

Volunteer Screening | Expert Reference Group

Volunteering WA established the Expert Reference Group to elevate volunteering and ensure the sustainability of the sector. Comprised of individuals from member volunteer-involving organisations, the group brings together experienced voices from different industries to improve the conditions for volunteering across Western Australia.

Advocacy Priority | Volunteer Screening Checks are free in most other states in territories, but in Western Australia there are still fees attached.
